Economic Development

The Comprehensive Plan leads the way to a sound fiscal base and to the increase in local job opportunities.

The jobs to population ratio
As recently as 1986, the city population to jobs ratio was 2.59 to one - worse than the state average, better than the county and area average. PSRC data, however, shows that from 1990 to 2010 the ratio is/will be close to 6 people to one local job, essentially twice as undesirable as the county average. This statistic explains why so many local vehicles cross the bridge to go to work.

Job creation is a prime goal of the city’s Comprehensive Plan. 2.5 people to one local job is a goal. With this in mind, the area north of the city shop on Skansie Avenue, and the Gig Harbor North area (with about 500 undeveloped commercial/professional acres), and the available city commercial space have been zoned for this change.

The Comprehensive Plan promotes home-based business, small business start-ups, property revitalization (i.e. the old Gateway property), public/private ventures, and protection of commercial and business districts from over-zoning. The city will focus on the individual needs of business neighborhoods as well as on development generally.

Currently, the city participates on the steering committee of the Tacoma/Pierce County Economic Development Board to help foster the success of the greater Tacoma/Pierce County economic community. As part of this effort, the Tacoma/Pierce County EDB recognizes that the Gig Harbor Peninsula is a unique area in Pierce County. The prevailing view is that Gig Harbor will never be an industrial area, the area lacks both the water and the transportation potential, but the urban area on the Gig Harbor Peninsula can become a work center that offers high quality local jobs. You can obtain more information on Economic Development from the website of the Economic Development Board from Tacoma-Pierce County at www.gopierce.org.
